A Family Tradition
The DiGiorgio & Maiani families go back centuries in Italy. Both families started
coming to the United States through Ellis Island in the early 1900’s. The Maianis
(JoAnn DiGiorgio’s family) is originally from the Independent Republic of San Marino and
the DiGiorgio family is from Cassino, Italy.
Over the years, both families came to settle in South Florida in the 1960’s, where Pasquale DiGiorgio came to meet JoAnn Maiani. Getting married in 1965 was just the beginning. Having two children, Robert & Gina, Pasquale had a desire to get ahead using old family recipes… and the rest is history. Over the past 50 years, there have been a number of restaurants in South Florida owned and operated by both the DiGiorgio and the Maiani families, and by various relatives. Living in South Florida, the DiGiorgios soon discovered Key Largo and fell in love with the people and what the area had to offer. By 1991, the DiGiorgios had permanently moved to Key Largo, purchased the waterfront property of B & G Goodyear Automotive at Sunset Cove on Florida Bay, and turned it into Café Largo. We later opened the Bayside Grill on the waterfront behind the Café.
Our grand opening took place on November 4th, 1992. Since then we have developed a reputation for serving some of the finest Italian food in the Upper Keys by concentrating on quality and on being a hands-on, family-run operation. Cassino, Italy
Monte Cassino is a rocky hill about 130 km (80 miles) south of Rome, Italy, a mile to the west of the town of Cassino (the Roman Casinum having been on the hill) and at an altitude of 520 m (1,700 ft). It is noted as the site where Benedict of Nursia established his first monastery, the source of the Benedictine Order, around 529, and of major battles towards the end of World War II. The Most Serene Republic of San Marino is a country in the Apennine Mountains. It is an enclave, completely surrounded by Italy. One of the European microstates, San Marino is the smallest protectorate state in the world both in terms of area and by population - it has the smallest population of all the members of the Council of Europe. According to tradition, San Marino is the oldest constitutional republic in the world still existing: it was founded in the year 301 by Marinus of Rab, a Christian stonemason fleeing the religious persecution of Roman Emperor Diocletian. San Marino has the oldest written constitution still in effect, dating back to 1600.
